Lithograph, signed lower left, housed within an oak and glazed frame 86cm by 67cm Footnote - John Leech was a celebrated English caricature artist and illustrator, best known for his long-standing work with Punch magazine and his social satire of Victorian life. Trained initially in medicine before devoting himself entirely to art, Leech became one of the defining visual satirists of his era, creating thousands of humorous woodcuts, political cartoons, and watercolours. He is particularly famous for illustrating Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (1843), providing the original hand-coloured steel etchings and woodcuts that defined the visual image of Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts. His work, characterized by its warm humour, keen observation of class nuances, and lively line work, holds a seminal place in 19th-century British graphic art.
