What this section covers
These are figurative paintings in the classical and impressionist traditions: river landscapes, seascapes, city views, portraits, still lifes and genre scenes. Most are oil paintings, with some watercolours and mixed media. Many are by named 19th- and 20th-century painters with their dates given, for example Gaetano Bocchetti (1888-1990); others are attributed to a school, such as Italian school (XIX). Most pieces here are between €500 and €5,000.
Understanding the attributions
- Artist name with dates means the work is given to that painter.
- Attr. (attributed to) means the work is thought to be by the artist, but with less certainty.
- School (XIX) or school (XX) means the painter is unknown; the work is placed by region and century. The Roman numerals give the century.
- After or da followed by a name means a copy or version of that artist's composition, not a work by them.
Condition of older paintings
Old oil paintings often show craquelure (fine cracking of the paint), some darkening of the varnish, relining or small retouches. None of these is unusual for age. Listings describe condition as Excellent, Good or Fair condition; read the description and look closely at the photos, especially raking-light shots, before buying. Also check whether the frame is included and whether the size given is the canvas or the framed size.
Signed or unsigned
The Signature field shows whether a work is hand signed or not signed. Many good period paintings are unsigned, so an unsigned work is not a sign of a problem in itself.
Frequently asked questions
What does 'Italian school (XIX)' mean?
It means the painter's name is not known, but the style, materials and subject place the work in Italy in the 19th century. The Roman numeral is the century: XVIII is the 18th, XIX the 19th, XX the 20th. School attributions are common for period paintings and usually sit at a lower price than works by a named artist.
What does 'attributed to' or 'Attr.' mean?
'Attributed to' means the work is believed to be by the named artist, but the attribution is less firm than a straight name. It is a standard term in the art trade. If an attribution matters to you, look at the signature, any labels on the back and the painting's style, and compare them with known works by that artist.
Is cracking in an old oil painting a problem?
Fine cracking of the paint, called craquelure, is normal in oil paintings that are decades or centuries old and is often taken as a sign of age. Lifting or flaking paint is different and needs a restorer. Check the photos and condition notes on each listing, and ask about any area you want to see more closely.
