A original illustration on paper, titled 'To Pillowland', executed in watercolor and ink signed by Chris G Temple who was a prolific illustrator of children’s books in the 1930’s and collaborated with, amongst others, Louis Wain. The composition depicts a whimsical procession of fourteen children and one small elf-like figure, all dressed in white nightgowns and sleeping caps. The figures are shown in various states of tiredness, carrying nighttime items including lanterns, lit candles, rag dolls, a large pillow, and a wheeled dog pull-toy. The figures are rendered with fine ink outlines and soft watercolor washes, a style characteristic of early 20th-century nursery illustrations. In the lower-left corner, a hand-lettered inscription in black ink reads 'TO PILLOWLAND.'. In the lower-right corner, the work is signed in black ink with the characters 'CHRIS. G. TEMPLE'. An additional small figure of an elf is depicted sitting atop a lantern in the lower-right area. The artwork is mounted behind a tan mat and housed in a simple black-painted wooden frame. Dimensions: Approx. 54.5cm wide x 24cm high
