UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797-1858) Edo period Rokujūyoshū meisho zue (Famous Places in the Sixty-Odd Provinces), a European mounted album, fifty-nine leaves. 34cm (13 3/8in) high x 22cm (8 5/8in) wide. Footnotes: Following the great success in the 1830s of Hiroshige's landscape series of the Tokaido and Kisokaido roads, the publisher Koshimuraya Heisuke embarked on the ambitious project that resulted in Sixty-odd Views of the Provinces, released between 1851 and 1853. The series marks Hiroshige's first foray into the vertical landscape format. The full set comprises sixty-nine woodblock prints and a contents page and is noted for its extensive use of colouration, bokashi graduation and high vantage point compositions.
