Provenance: Sale, Franklin Browns, Edinburgh, Paintings and Prints, 12 June 2026, set 160 Frederick Adolphus 'Eric' Simonds (1881 - 1853) was born in Reading to parents Louis de Luze and his wife Mary. He was educated at Park House, Reading, Eton collage and Oxford University. In 1900 he was invited to volunteer with the Royal Berkshire Regiment, serving in South Africa. Upon his return home in 1901, he joined the family brewing business. In 1909, he married Amy Fitzgerald (1883 - 1969) and the couple had four children. In 1928, Simonds served as High Sherriff of Berkshire. The work is framed and was not examined out of its frame. There are a few small dents to the canvas and scuffs to the surface of the paint, notably to the upper left and right quadrants, to the areas of the background. As visible in the photographs. Two of the dents may have caused slight tears to the canvas.
