Footnotes: 中國畫家 十九世紀 鳥圖一組八幅 水粉通草畫 Provenance: Lt. Col. Henry Courtney Brocklehurst (1888-1942) His brother Lt. Col. Sir Philip Lee Brocklehurst Bt, (1887-1975), Swythamley Park, near Macclesfield until 1975 Thence by descent Both brothers were extensive travellers and explorers, Sir Philip having been on Shackleton's 1907 - 1909 Nimrod expedition to the Antarctic and who later travelled through both the Middle and Far East. His brother Courtney, who went with him to the Arctic in 1912 and later became game warden of the Sudan in the 1920s, then went on to travel extensively in China, Japan and Tibet in the 1930s, bringing back the first giant panda from Tibet to the UK. Many of the artefacts collected on these travels were put on loan at the West Park Museum, which had been built by the Brocklehurst family for safe keeping during the war, and when he was killed in 1942 fighting with the Chindits in Burma, his brother Philip inherited the contents of the museum where they remained until after his death in 1975.
